Start with your real budget

Work out what remains after housing, bills, food, existing debts and other essentials. Allow for insurance, fuel or charging, tax, servicing and repairs, as well as unexpected costs. Think about whether payments would still be affordable if your circumstances changed.

Compare the whole agreement

A longer term can reduce monthly payments but increase the total interest paid. Compare offers on the same amount and term where possible.

  • Cash price, deposit and amount of credit.
  • APR, interest rate and whether it is fixed or variable.
  • Number of repayments and total amount payable.
  • Fees, optional final payment and early-settlement terms.
  • Mileage and condition requirements on PCP.

Use estimates as a starting point

Our calculator uses the business-supplied 9.9% representative APR with no deposit, fees or balloon payment. It is an illustration, not a personalised offer. Your actual rate and terms depend on the lender and your circumstances; approval is not guaranteed.

A representative APR is not a rate offered to everyone. Where this regulatory description applies, at least 51% of customers expected to take out the agreements resulting from the promotion must receive that APR or lower. The business’s representative example still requires lender confirmation and approval before launch.

Benefits come with responsibilities

Finance can spread a car’s cost over time rather than requiring the full price upfront. It also creates a repayment commitment and usually increases the total cost compared with paying cash. Timely repayments may contribute to a positive credit history, but taking out finance solely to improve a score is not a reason to borrow.

If payments become difficult

Contact your lender as early as possible to discuss support. Missed payments can damage your credit record, lead to charges and put the vehicle at risk of repossession. Do not assume further borrowing will solve the problem. Free, independent money and debt guidance is available from MoneyHelper.
